Fault Finding & Electrical Repairs

J R Electrical are experts in investigating, diagnosing and rectifying all types of electrical faults. We have great experience in this particular field and have all the latest calibrated test equipment to carry out a diagnostics should your electrics break down. We deal with both simple supply problems for instance lights/sockets not working/tripping to complicated intermitant faults. Emergency breakdowns are frequently carried out and often we can be on the job the same day of calling.

Over the last decade or so, our home and work place has changed rapidly, requiring more electricity than ever to power all the latest high tech equipment and accessories we use. It is often taken for granted that electrical wiring will work all the time. In most cases if a circuit has been designed and installed properly, it will work for years with no problems at all. Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world and a huge amount of wiring installed is badly designed, under rated and not in compliance with any regulations. This gives rise to the chance of an electrical fault developing.

There are many different types of electrical faults that can occur, some can be simple shorts in the wiring that can cause a fuse to blow. Replacing or resetting the fuse will not rectify the problem in this case. A test will be needed to be carried out on the wiring to determine what type of fault has occurred. Once this is ascertained it will be a matter of tracing the wiring till it is found. This can sometimes mean needing access to underfloor junction boxes and terminations.

Other types of fault can be more difficult to rectify. For instance an RCD that keeps tripping every now and then with no apparent pattern to the tripping. This type of intermittent fault can be harder to rectify as it is difficult to determine whether it is a genuine fault with an appliance/wiring or due to the RCD nuisance tripping due to natural earth leakage of your electronic appliances in your home/workplace.

With the new 17th Edition Wiring Regulations now in place, it is much more common to find the use of RCD's protecting our circuits for extra safety. These modules are very sensitive to earth faults and any wiring that is not up to a good standard is likely to trip out these units. It is common to find when having a new RCD fuseboard installed for instance to find that some circuits cannot be energised by the new consumer unit as an existing fault exists. Most older fusebox's wouldn't have been able to detect this and therefore kept a faulty circuit energised. Increasing the risk of a shock or fire hazard.

Other things that can cause electrics to fail are external influences, for instance water getting into terminations is common and will trip most fuses/RCD's. Rodents chewing through wiring can often cause shorts too. Mice/rats like to develop their teeth on the cables pvc insulation, often they are electrocuted and will leave the conductors bare to touch under the floorboards.

Mechanical damage and misuse of an electrical system can also have detrimental effects. Overloading points can cause the insulation on the wiring to overheat/melt particularly if the circuit is badly designed with the incorrect fuse rating. It will carry on degrading over a number of years until it eventually causes the fuse to trip. Most faults like this will display a poor insulation reading with the probability that rewiring will be required.
